Aboriginal Ways of Learning

The Medicine Wheel
On October 9, 2013, Jan Sherman led a training session for Action Read volunteers called ‘Journeying Around the Medicine Wheel’. In this workshop, we learned Aboriginal ways to enhance understanding of what approaching learning as a spirit, a heart, a body, and a mind means. We also increased our appreciation of learning not just as a solitary process, but one based on relationships.  Jan explained what ‘walking your truth’ meant to her, and offered participants opportunities for self-reflection in order to begin to understand themselves at a deeper level. Participants were able to recognize that they all had important medicines (abilities, skills, gifts) that could be used in the tutoring session and for the greater good of all.  Not only was the training inspirational, it was also practical, with lots of good discussion, tips and hands-on experiences to support the learning.
