SCRABBLE in the Square

Left to Right - Board Member Devon Sivill, Right Honorable Liz Sandals, Ontario Minister of Education, Sheila O'Reilly, Ajay Heble, Right Honorable Member of Parliament Frank Valeriote and children, Executive Director Mira Clarke and Constable Buzz Dean
On Saturday May 10th, 2014 Action Read participated in an event organized by the Downtown Guelph Business Association called ‘Downtown Gives Back’.  On this day 10% of proceeds from purchases at participating stores and restaurants were donated to eight charities, including Action Read.  It was a fabulous opportunity for us, and really fun to boot!
In order to raise awareness about the charitable purpose behind this event and about literacy in particular, Action Read hosted a community SCRABBLE tournament at the St. George’s Square Activity Court. Community members played a ‘snappy’ game of SCRABBLE. Teams of four assembled, though hecklers and audience participation was encouraged.  The only serious player invited were those who were seriously silly (...Guelphies are very silly).  20 point bonuses were handed out to clever individuals around a series of, ah, creative rules.  Then at noon we held our version of celebrity SCRABBLE where local celebs ‘racked’ their brains, and battled it out in a war of words. It was a great event!  Thanks to the Downtown Board and to everyone who participated.

SCRABBLE is serious!  Don't mess with these folks.
