Poetry Retreat a Huge Hit!

On Friday September 26^th, Action Read learners had the good fortune of participating in a writer’s retreat lead by Canadian poet (and former Action Read tutor) Karen Houle.  This was an exciting opportunity, as Karen’s wonderful energy, her extensive teaching skills and her deep understanding of the craft of writing, inspired and uplifted us throughout the day.  Furthermore, we enjoyed that most outstanding natural setting, on an outstandingly sunny day!  The retreat was held at North House, an architecturally designed building that has the capacity to produce twice as much energy as it consumes.  North House is located on the RARE ecological research reserve in Cambridge ON.  In fact, Karen is the inaugural writer-in-residence at RARE.  Throughout the fall, she will work on her writing, while also hosting writer’s retreats and educational tours.

The day was enchanting from start to finish.  We learned different approaches to poetry, and explored ways to find inspiration in the everyday objects and events that make up our lives.  We enjoyed a most delicious lunch thanks to our very talented ‘chef’ and staff member Joanne.  We were even able to walk around the impressive community gardens set on the reserve. We are most grateful to RARE and to the Musagetes Foundation for this opportunity.  We are also grateful to Karen Houle for sparking the poet in all of us, and reminding us of the joy of language and the importance of celebrating our personal paths.
